How to interpret WAR: A WAR of 0 represents replacement level (roughly the 37th percentile among NHL regulars). Elite players typically achieve 3-5+ WAR per season. The very best players like Connor McDavid can exceed 6+ WAR in exceptional seasons. WAR is calculated using RAPM (Regularized Adjusted Plus-Minus) methodology combined with expected goals models.
